March 1, 2012: New ACTTION Initiative on Assessment of Abuse Liability

ACTTION is pleased to announce that it is launching an initiative to develop definitions, classification systems, and rating scales for evaluating abuse liability of analgesic medications.

This initiative ─ “Abuse Liability Evaluation for Research, Treatment, and Training” (ALERTT) ─ will be an ongoing effort focusing on approaches that can be used for evaluating misuse, abuse, diversion, and other evidence of abuse liability in patients with chronic pain. ALERTT will be closely modeled on the FDA-Columbia University effort that developed C-CASA and C-SSRS for evaluating suicidality in clinical trials.
